His Return to India :

After his return to India Vikram joined the Indian Institute of Science at Bangalore where he had the rare opportunity of working under Sir C. V.Raman, the great Nobel Laureate. There he researched Cosmic rays. He Always knew that the study of cosmic rays would help in understanding terrestrial magnetism, and the atmosphere, the nature of the Sun, and outer space. In 1942 he worked on the weather at the Meteorological Department at Poona. 

He was particularly interested in the study of cosmic rays. He went to the Himalayan Mountain to conduct experiments on cosmic rays. He was awarded a Ph.D. by the Cambridge University in 1947 for his studies on that subject. Further, he set up a Research Laboratory for cosmic rays at Ahmedabad. Using telescopes and other instruments, he and his students made accurate observations on cosmic rays. While working at the Physical Research Centre, he developed an interest in outer space and the Research Centre became the Centre of Studying Space Physics, Plasma Physics, and such other allied subjects. Soon the Laboratory became internationally famous.

Dr. Vikram, as an ideal teacher :

As a teacher, he commanded the love and respect of pupils. He was friendly with his students. He proved a friend, philosopher, and guide to his students.

An Incident :

An incident in the laboratory speaks volumes of his kindly attitude to his students. Once a research student burnt an electric meter. He feared punishment. But Sarabhai only smiled and said, "Don't worry we will buy another one. How else would you learn."

Sarabhai starts Pharmaceutical Industry:

Sarabhai realized the importance of chemical industries in India. He set up Sarabhai Chemicals, a Pharmaceutical Industry in Ahmedabad. He aimed to make India self-reliant in medicine.

The Indian Committee on Space Research:

In 1969 Sarabhai formed the Indian Committee on Space Research. He wanted India to be a leader in the field of Space Science.
