death along with the French astronauts.
Summary :
1. In this article, Willie Mc Cool, the boyish pilot aboard Columbia, the American Space shuttle describes his experience. He describes the overwhelming sense of jubilation. The spacecraft was on its 255th journey around the earth and the time was 8.30 p.m. in Florida. Columbia was getting ready for its reentry. Everything was all right. The multitude especially from India was waiting for the landing with anxiety because Kalpana Chawla was one of the Crews, to go into space.
All the astronauts strapped themselves and the spacecraft started moving fast. The touchdown time was 9.16 a.m. There was a group of excited space watchers. Everything was fine. The weather was excellent. Unfortunately, the space shuttle caught fire and broke apart. Small glowing pieces were seen in the sky over Florida.
This tragedy happened on Feb. 1, 2003, barely eleven minutes before the scheduled touchdown time. The whole world was plunged into mourning. All the people watched with horror the video footage showing the disintegration of the space shuttle more than 2000 ft. above Central Texas. Atal Bihari Vajpayee then, the Prime Minister of India sent a special
message to the American President saying that the Indian people mourn with them. So India renamed its first weather satellite KALPANA—I in her honor. (METSAT).
2. Kalpana Chawla was born on July 1, 1963, in Karnal (a small town in Haryana), 125 Kms. off Delhi, She was the daughter of Bansari Lal Chawla and Sanjogia. Sanjay is her brother. Chawla did her schooling in the Tagore school.
She used to visit her school by riding a bicycle and she always fancied that she was not riding a bike but flying a pushback plane above. She was a dreamer. Karnal had a flying club for amateurs. Kalpana got the consent of her father and joined this club. She flew in these pushpaks and even sailed a Glider.
3. She always watched the sky. She would sleep in the front yard of her house and looked at the spangled sky and wished that she had a telescope. She was a brilliant girl and never bothered about home tuition, marks, or rank. She was fond of music, dancing, and karate. She always told her brother that she was a unique girl. who could excel boys? Then she came to know about J.R.D. Tata and his work. She had great respect for him.
She saw the airplanes that Tata flew hanging in one of the aerodromes.
4. Kalpana chose science and completed Pre—University course. She then joined the Punjab Engineering College and took her degree in Aeronautical Engineering. She got her degree and moved to the United States. She met Mr. Jean Pierre Harrison (a freelance flying instructor) on the very first day. He had the same views and beliefs. The similarity of their views brought them closer and they decided to marry.
Then in 1984, she got her Masters’s Degree in Aerospace Engineering from the Texas University and was later awarded a Ph.D. from Colorado University in 1988. This has been achieved because of the support and encouragement of her husband. Then she started working for NASA. She was trained for 3 years and was selected to be an astronaut candidate. Her dream came true. Her first flight on the space shuttle Columbia was from Nov. 19 to Dec. 5, 1997.
She went into space again on Jan. 16, 2003, aboard Columbia. More than 80 experiments in BioloU, Bio-medicine, earth and space science, physics, and technology were conducted successfully in space. By then she had traveled 6.5 million miles in 252 orbits of the earth she spent 376 hours and 34 minutes in space. Unfortunately, Kalpana Chawla and her six crewmates perished over Texas as the Columbia spacecraft was entering the earth's atmosphere.
5. On that tragic day, not knowing the tragedy, the students at Karnal were enjoying dancing and setting off firecrackers in anticipation of the safe landing. When they came to know the sad news they were stunned. It was a bolt from the blue. They mourned. George Bush then, the President of America said that Kalpana left India as a student, but would see the nation of her birth all of it from hundreds of miles above.
7. Sanjay was full of grief. His sorrow knew no bounds. He exclaimed "To me, my sister is not dead, she is immortal, she is a permanent star in the sky. She lies till doom's day."
