His Boyhood:


Narendranath was born into a respectable family in 1863. His father, Viswanath Dutta was a well-known lawyer of Kolkata. His mother Bhuvaneshwari Devi was a pious woman. The family was known for its charity. Narendra was influenced by his mother in religious matters. She told him stories from the Epics — Mahabharata and Ramayana and Puranas.


Even at his young age, he was found philosophic and contemplative. Once Narendra and his friends sat for meditation. A cobra came gliding along the ground. His friends ran away in terror. His friends shouted at him. But he did not hear them for he was sitting still in deep contemplation.


His Education :


At the age of seven, he was sent to Metropolitan School. He was found extraordinary

in school—studies. He never told a lie. He was so truthful and honest. He did well in college as well. He passed his B.A. from the General Assembly College. The Principal of the College W.W. Hastie saw some divine spark in him and spoke to him about Ramkrishna Paramhamsa.


Meeting with Sri Ramakrishna :


As a student of philosophy, he visited Sri Ramakrishna at Dakshineshwar and asked

him "Have you seen God?" Sri Ramakrishna said, "Yes, I have. If you wish I can show you."Narendra was deeply impressed by his meeting with Sri Ramakrishna's divine appearance and beauty.


Sri Ramakrishna suffered from Cancer and Narendra and his disciples nursed him.

Sri Ramakrishna advised him to take to monastic life. He accordingly founded a monastery at Bara-Nagar. They put on yellow robes and wandered about other monks. Narendra assumed the name Swami Vivekananda.


Swami Vivekanand at Chicago :


Sri Ramakrishna wanted Narendra to attend the Parliament of Religions at Chicago. Swami Vivekanand became world-famous by his speech at the Parliament of Religions. He began his speech by saying "Sisters and Brothers of America". Immediately there was thunderous applause from the vast audience and it lasted for two minutes. Swamiji presented Hinduism as a way of life and further said that all religions are true and all should be accepted. He stressed the greatness of all religions. The newspapers proclaimed him a prophet and seer.


The Ramakrishna Mission :


Swamiji established the Ramakrishna MiSsion whose aim was to organize and

translate into action the message of Sri Ramakrishna. The motto of the Mission stood with the new approach. Atrnano Mokshartham Jagat Hitaya Cha (Spiritual liberation as well as the well-being of humanity).


The Passing away :


It was Friday, the fourth of July 1902. He breathed his last after meditation.
